Title: 10th Anniversary Meet-Up (2016)
Post by: Milieva on July 12, 2015, 10:26:17 PM
It was brought up on the chat that we should have a meet-up for the 10th anniversary of the forum, which is mid-march.

We're thinking in the UK.  There less drama if international people want to fly in to Norwich (airport code NWI).  You'll come through Schiphol in Amsterdam, which is big and a little confusing, but we can give you more info before you get here.

Let us know if you're interested!

Current Info

Dates Proposed: 12-20 March

Location: Somewheres in England

need to get a new passport as mine is long expired, but I can't think of a reason why I won't be able to make it! <3  my husband Chris also wants to come along, just to visit England, and there's a good chance he'll be doing his own thing much of the time.

I would love too do that, I've never been abroad. But sadly I have a severe lack of funds to be doing anything really. But hey who knows March is still a ways off.

Definitely interested! Know I have a passport, but have to find it and see if it's still good.

Woah! This sounds like such a good time, I'd love to try and coordinate, but as of yet I have no idea what school for me will be like next year. I will still keep this trip in mind though, because meeting you all has been something I've always wanted to try~

The anniversary of the forum is the 14th?  But we don't have to do the meetup over that date, so we could very well try to accomodate what schedules we could.  I have no idea what my year will look like, either.  Who knows....

We've got a few ideas of what we might do one day, involving an outing out to the coast near here.  Depending upon the schedule, it could involve a ride on a steam train.

That would be nice! I don't know whether I'll make it or not, but I'd like to meet you! :)

I was thinking that I wouldn't be able to do this, but I was discussing it with my mom yesterday and she said that she could potentially see turning it into a thing for my entire family. Like, she and my dad would do their own thing during the meetup and then we'd take some time as a family to just do touristy stuff for a few days. I'd definitely need more information before we could make any definite decisions, though.

Also, just as a reminder, I am physically disabled and must use either a wheelchair or a mobility scooter outside the house.

I'm sure we can work that out.

Anyone have any thoughts on dates?

So long as we have set dates far enough in advance to get decent flights, I don't have a date preference. Also, as somebody whose main issues do not usually impair my mobility or ability to do manual labor, I am perfectly okay with accommodating/helping out anybody with issues that do.

My own issues are mostly social. Got Aspergers, AD/HD, and Anxiety, but so long as I'm on my meds, it shouldn't be a big deal. I do stim by pacing A LOT (doing it right now, in fact), and if you want me to stop, you'll probably have to give me something to do (brush a kitty, start a card game, direct me to some chore, etc.). Also, if I say or do something upsetting, please call me out on it! Chances are that what I actually meant didn't come out right and I'll be glad for the opportunity to correct. And, of course, I will need some time to myself, because even dealing with awesome people can be exhausting, and the more overwhelmed I get, the more likely it is I'll say something I'll regret, and that outcome is no fun for anyone.

Otherwise, I should be good.

I am also okay with any date.  we were thinking if it's sometime in March, we'd get plane tickets around Christmastime?

last I heard Jam can probably come!

Awesome.   I'll work out when I can take time off in March, and we'll go from there.

I have the week off 14-18 March, which leaves us 12-20 March to find time for a meet up, if that works for everyone.  I'm sorry, I work for a school, so time off is tricky.  (and our first anniversary is the 3rd, so will be doing out own holiday that weekend......

I'm not sure what anyone might want to do.  We should probably have a chat once we have more definite attendees.

If anyone wants to get in touch for more info or contact information, please drop me an email at milieva.p (at) gmail.com

I can definitely do any of those dates, our schedules are flexible!  just need to decide soonish since we wanted to buy tickets by Christmastime or so!  Chris' bday is the 22nd so that would be a nice time to do something special like visit England :>

If you want your last airport to be quiet and small, I would suggest flying into NWI. It involves coming through Amsterdam, which is giant, but there is less of a queue at customs (no queue for no EU). But it does require a train trip to get to London, but that can be done after crashing from the long flight.

But you can always fly into London and one of us can meet you there. I think Cami said she is meeting Rev in London, possibly renting a car, so that's an option.

We should probably try to get a count so we can figure out how many we have and how many are staying where. Do we want to just do London, or would someone be interested in renting a little cottage or house or tower thing somewhere cool on an National Trust site?

Down and I will be renting self-catered accommodation anywhere we are as she's allergic to everything, so there will be kitchen facilities where ever we are.

Could be fun to rent a cottage at a place like Blickling, if anyone is interested.

4 Park Gates (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/4-park-gates-blickling-aylsham-norfolk/?currentTab=DETAILS) can sleep up to 8

Bureside (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/bureside-aylsham-norfolk/?currentTab=DETAILS) and Meadowside (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/meadowside-aylsham-norfolk/?currentTab=DETAILS) both sleep up to 4 people, but look to be side by side.

Mill Farm barn (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/mill-farm-barn-aylsham-norfolk/?currentTab=DETAILS) which sleeps 6....

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Down's favourite place, The Tower (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/the-tower-aylsham-norfolk/), is available that week.

There is also Felbrigg Estate

Game Keeper's Cottage (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/game-keeper-s-cottage-cromer-norfolk/) sleeps 5

Sexton's Lodge  (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/sexton-s-lodge-cromer-norfolk/)also sleeps 5

Then, Squire's Retreat (http://www.nationaltrustholidays.org.uk/holiday-cottage/the-squire-s-retreat-cromer-norfolk/) sleeps 8

There are other smaller accommodations scattered across both properties if anyone wanted their own place but still wanted to be near the rest of us. I just think something nice and relaxing might be good either before or after the bustle of London, as I know many of our international visitors would like to see the city, even if just for a few days.  Both estates have long lovely walking paths and the large estates to visit if we stayed over the first weekend, but people might be sleepy, having just arrived.

Re: the above, yes I'm happy to do airport runs if/when I rent a car, but I will only be renting it if we're leaving Greater London - I've no problems renting it but I'm not willing to keep paying congestion charges and city parking, haha. But I don't mind getting the tube/train to airports and helping people get back into the city either. I'm v confident on the London Underground and national train network if that helps anyone feel better.

Rev and I might depart just before the latter weekend so she can come celebrate my birthday with me and my family (same day as suz's husband???) but otherwise whatever anyone else wants to do sounds good!

P.S. if you're visiting London for more than a couple of days, it's totally worth looking into the Visitor Oyster Card (https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/visiting-london/visitor-oyster-card).

Well, I was meant to come down for your birthday this year, but, well, we all know.

My contract ends in February so unless I find more work, I'm completely free [panicked laughter]

That time frame is perfectly fine with me!

As for the specific wheres and whats while there, hows abouts I just leave those kinds of decisions to those of you who actually know the area, and I will fork over money for my share of the expenses whenever necessary? The only thing I'd specifically like to do is make a stop in Ascot sometime just to say I'd been there (and maybe get photos of me with a plushie in front of a sign like the complete embarrassment I am just be glad there won't be cosplay), but if that doesn't happen, well, I'll live. Somehow. ;)

Ascot is a <1hr mainline train ride from London Waterloo (which is easily accessible on the tube), so you should have no problem getting there that way if all else fails!

Edit: coincidentally, I was only 15 miles away from Ascot today at a supplier meeting. xD

So..... Windsor/Ascot/London short outing and something a bit more rural, staying mostly out of central London aside from maybe a day trip so us introverts can hermit together?

Flying into London seems to be the cheaper option. It's at least $200 cheaper on average than flying into Norwich.  I don't know what anyone wants to do.   We need to get that sorted soon, so we can book accommodation?

Maybe we could arrange a skype call, if you like... So I can share my lovely italian accent with you!  ;D

Can't wait to see you all! When will everyone be in London?

Down and I will be arriving the evening of the 11th. I haven't asked if I can get it off work or not, so that will affect our travel time.  We'll be about to collect Mokona and Suz the morning of the 12th.  We'll be staying near Kings Cross and St. Pancras.

Rev and I will be in London from 12th - 15th March (Saturday to Tuesday), somewhere between Bayswater tube and Paddington tube/mainline stations, above the north west corner of Hyde Park. We'll be using Kings Cross St Pancras as our Northern/Circle change station so that's handy!

If anyone wants to come down to Weymouth (http://wikitravel.org/en/Weymouth) (wey-muth!) for a day trip, hit us up later in the week! Be warned it's three hours each way, but it is a nice direct ride from Waterloo.

Aaaand finally if anyone's got a car, justpark.com (http://www.justpark.com) is awesome and highly recommended, and don't forget the congestion charge (https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge).

I'm totally up for it! I'm a newbie here, but Rayearth is like a family, isn't it? I mean, we've been loving this manga for so long... Somehow, we can understand each other and share our feelings about it. Being Rayearth-addicted is a way of life <3

I'll be up for a Skype call if we can coordinate it! Otherwise Rev and I can totally conference in from home if another time is more convenient. =D Skype do group video calls for free now, or Hangouts (https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/3111943?hl=en-GB) is great for that too if you've got Google accounts.

Was just gonna add our specific times:

Saturday 12th March, Rev and I will be at Waterloo by approximately 10:00. We're gonna meet Antoinette and go to the aquarium before we have to check in to our apartment.

Tuesday 15th March, we need to be leaving Waterloo at about 13:30 so hopefully we could maybe meet for breakfast with people before we go?

(Rev is with me until Saturday 19th March, I should say for the purpose of video call arranging.)

No real plans otherwise! I might like to go to Westfield in Shepherd's Bush at some point (the restaurants are amaaaazing, I'd love to do Cabana again) but that's all I thought about.
