Worldbuilding / The World of Post-Cephiro
September 05, 2021, 08:06:14 PM
So, on my tumblr recently, I had thoughts about what might've happened in Cephiro immediately after all the shenanigans and goings on of the series, and figured I might as well add it here. Feel free to share your thoughts on it or any of your own theories and headcanons.

QuoteI'm not sure if I've ever made more than a passing reference to this before, but here it is. My headcanon for the immediate aftermath.

Right after the old pillar system is abolished and the new system comes into play, the world of Cephiro is in flux. The castle's still there, but the world around it is reshaping itself according to the will of the people there. Slowly, new permanent geology begin to emerge.

First comes many of the world's old prominent features that the majority of the world recalls. The ocean, the floating mountains, and the volcano, for example. Next, specific areas resembling the collective memories of those who've lived in those places for decades, even centuries, crop up, and people eager to go back to their old peaceful lives hastily seek those places out the moment they understand that's what's happening. Unfortunately, this leads to some casualties, as some perfectly stable land masses can be surrounded by fluid ones, and they quickly learn not to travel to these new places by foot or cart.

Thus, one of the first priorities of the new Cephiro is to map out the new world, to determine which areas have solidified and which areas are still deciding just what they want to be, and to figure out how they can consciously change the process themselves. As time goes on, the more the world settles into a strange mishmash of the old they remember fondly combined with the aspirations and influences of the new.
~
Autozam is the first of the other worlds to have a presence on Cephiro. They set up a research station in permanent orbit around the world to constantly collect data, just close enough that the abundance of magic doesn't interfere too much with their technology. It starts out being run entirely by Autozamian scientists and military, but after concerns from the others about the possibility of a takeover if left unchecked, an agreement is reached to allow other world's scientists to join their efforts.

Chizeta is the first to have immigrants settling on Cephiro. It starts with an unauthorized ship chartered by an opportunist who convinced several hundred people to give up their life savings with the hopes of a better life on a new world, which prompted emergency meetings between Cephiran and Chizetan officials to hammer out some semblance of an immigration agreement. The immigrants live in the castle at first, and then find their way out. Some decide to join some nice communities already there, but most band together to settle on a new fixed landmass that's begun to form. It'd be a lie to say the transition was entirely peaceful, as Cephirans as a people are extremely unfamiliar with outside cultures, but some form of understanding is eventually reached. They come up with a perfectly good name for their settlement, but it's still often referred to as 'Chizeta Number Two' in jest.

Fahren has no immediate need for Cephiro's research or land, but they are the first to come to a trade agreement. At a time when Cephiro is trying to devote as much willpower as possible to the land development, it seems prudent to import many goods that would otherwise be created by will, and Fahren is the country best able to provide. It's an investment on their part at first, until the world forms enough of its own natural resources and materials to allow them a true bartering system. Though Fahrenese immigrants are uncommon compared to Chizetan and Autozamian ones, Fahrenese merchants are a very regular presence.

General Rayearth Discussion / Fancasting!
April 17, 2017, 02:33:04 AM
Didn't see this topic anywhere, so I'll just make this one. In a live-action adaption of Magic Knight Rayearth, who would you cast?

For Ascot, I would use a time machine to get a younger Eddie Redmayne. Just ten to fifteen years back, perhaps. He tends to be cast a lot younger than he actually is, anyway.

And for Caldina, I believe several of us on tumblr have decided she should be played by Nicki Minaj.

This one speaks for itself, really.

How would you cast the others? Or do you have other people in mind for Ascot or Caldina? Remember, time machines are allowed!

So, for all its flaws and its (IMHO) inferiority to the manga, the anime did give us some interesting concepts. I'm particularly fond of the beast episodes and the Knights getting captured myself.

My question is, what other kinds of episodes do you wish they'd tried? I'm not talking about stuff that was in the manga but got cut for Mokona knows what reasons, I'm talking missed opportunities for new character development/interactions or world building. Perhaps we could call this an episode wishlist? I'll start.

  • A flashback episode or two about stuff that happened during the season gap.
  • An Ascot+Caldina team-up in the first season where they actually combine their talents against the Magic Knights. Illusions mixed with a few real beasts? Not only is there danger that can't be avoided by just closing their eyes, there's also the added uncertainty that comes with having to distinguish between real and fake, and consequences for guessing wrong ("I just wasted my breath fighting this whole team cause I couldn't tell which one was the original!" or "Please, that's so obviously fake- OH GOD IT'S NOT!").
Other ideas?

Out of all the original manga characters (excluding the Magic Knight families), I think Lafarga is the one with the least developed character in just about any given version of Magic Knight Rayearth. Yes, we know less about him than we do about Alcyone. Not that there isn't a character there, mind you, just that you have to dig a lot deeper into less info to figure it out. Well, as it turns out, that's my specialty. The Ascot character-mining came naturally, Caldina was a good warm-up, so now I think I'm ready to tackle some of Lafarga's character.

You know what non-Rayearth scene Lafarga brings to mind for me?  In the Doctor Who episode "Doomsday," there's a character, Yvonne Hartman, who, despite getting turned into a Cyberman, still manages to override the programming and take some other Cyberman down with her. The last words we hear from her are, "I did my duty for queen and country." (You can see that bit here) Now, just to clarify, Yvonne Hartman herself doesn't remind of Lafarga, just that one scene, that repeated "I did my duty for queen and country" as if it was the only thing keeping her going.

I feel like Lafarga is the character who believed in what Cephiro was the most, and as such, is the one that probably felt the most shocked and betrayed when everything fell apart. He probably knew Zagato and Emeraude personally, but likely didn't know about their feelings like Clef or Lantis did. He was devoted to protecting the pillar, to the point that he would face Zagato head on, to the point that Hikaru's mentioning of the Princess momentarily frees him from Zagato's control. So, given that much, how do you think such a devotedly patriotic heart is going to handle the news that Emeraude chose to do this? How is Lafarga going to take the realization that by trying to save her, he was actually fighting against her? The pillar system, this country, it's probably most, if not all, he's known and believed in his entire life, unlike Caldina, who's been all sorts of places. Also, unlike Ascot, the system was working very well for Lafarga personally, so he had no reason to really question the foundations. You know, stuff like this is why I think Mid Knight Skies is what needs to be written more than any other epic MKR idea I have (and believe me, there are tons).

Moving on, what else do we know about Lafarga? Well, he seems to bear a bit of a grudge against Lantis, understandably enough. Given the whole patriotic part, he's not gonna think too well of someone who left their country knowing a crisis was imminent. And, of course, him and Caldina are a thing. Would've been nice to get some more development on that in any version. I can think of loads of scenes that could be cut from the anime to make room for a few good flashback sequences showing what happened instead of the two of them just telling us in that one scene. It's just a matter of deciding what should be cut first, really.

Anyone else with Lafarga thoughts to share?

Fanon & Brainstorming / OC Show and Tell
November 25, 2015, 06:55:40 PM
As much as we love most of the regular cast, the universes of Magic Knight Rayearth don't just consist of them. So, here's the place to tell us about the MKR Original Characters you've developed. Maybe give us a name, a bit about who they are/what they do/where they show up, if you'd be okay with others 'borrowing' said characters in their stuff, whatever. This isn't just limited to quality OCs either, so feel free to post about your most blatant self-inserts or cliche stock characters! Will post some of mine later.

Now, personally, I find it much easier to pretend Sierra never happened. Her appearance in the anime is basically a giant 'WTF?' with giant fingerprints of contrivance all over it.

But, I'll try to set that aside for a moment. So, is it possible to make anything of Sierra?

Ultimately, I feel like what makes her fail as a character is that we can't even begin to comprehend her motivations based on what we're given. So, she decided to pretend to be Presea. Um, why? Even if we try to claim it's out of some misguided sense of 'she didn't want the people involved in her death to feel guilty' there's the fact that she didn't know any of these people beforehand.

Okay, let's unpack that one further. The people involved in her death were the Magic Knights and Ascot. At the time she showed up at the castle, nobody would've considered the Magic Knights returning to Cephiro as anything more than wishful thinking, so that leaves Ascot. Problem is, how would she even know he was involved? Even Presea and the Magic Knights probably don't realize Ascot had anything to do with it. The only people that would know? Ascot, Caldina, and maybe Alcyone. Alcyone wasn't around at the beginning of the second season, I seriously doubt Caldina's telling anybody except for maybe Lafarga, and Ascot, well, while I could see him feeling the need to confess at some point, I don't think he'd be there just yet. (Interesting things they could've done: Had Caldina and Ascot be the only ones who realized something was wrong with 'Presea' showing up at the castle at first, but not saying anything because that would mean Ascot admitting that he'd killed her. Clef not getting suspicious until the Magic Knights showed up and were all, "But you died!")

Now, maybe some of them mistakenly identified her as Presea before she had a chance to correct them and she just went with it, but then there's the question, 'Why doesn't anybody know her as Sierra?' I mean, she's also a Pharle, presumably she had people that she made weapons for, unless she was Presea's apprentice that was just locked in the basement whenever company came over... Or if she was a Presea con-artist, located in some remote village. Or a Stepford Wife Presea clone. (Other interesting things they could've done: Give Sierra a shady backstory, like make her a thief, and have her pretending to be Presea actually be a way of escaping the authorities)

I ask again, how do we solve a problem like Sierra?

Fanon & Brainstorming / A Very Cephiran Tabletop RPG
August 12, 2015, 01:02:23 AM
So I have this idea for an Tabletop RPG setup, and felt like sharing with the class.

Basically, the game goes, a group of people in Cephiro join together and go on a quest to save Princess Emeraude. Or maybe they were journeying beforehand and just decided to try saving her when they found out. Whatever works.

Only these people aren't the Magic Knights, so they're doomed to fail. The best they could do is kill Zagato. But hey, the party doesn't know that (or if somebody does, they're keeping it a secret for their own nefarious reasons). And up to that point, it can be an incredibly epic journey through Cephiro. You might even get to meet some of your favorite MKR characters as NPCs, and get a glimpse of what life in Cephiro was like for them pre-Magic Knights.

Character creation: You can't be a Magic Knight. But you could be a sword fighter, a summoner, a mage, a fairy, a beast turned human(ish), some sort of sentient spirit, an artisan, one of the Inner Guard, someone from one of the other worlds who somehow managed to end up on Cephiro, a simple farmer or townsperson way over their head with this whole 'Let's save the world!' nonsense and who even convinced them this quest was a good idea anyway, the list goes on. It's very open-ended. (Fun possibility: Everybody develops their character secretly, only getting approval from the GM to make sure it isn't overpowered or overly implausible or a Magic Knight. They then have to go on the quest with this party, even if it turns out everybody decided to be a mystical pet rock)

Gameplay: It would probably be more about the role-play than leveling up/developing skills. The strength/magic/general usefulness potential of the characters is going to vary wildly within the group, but it will be theoretically possible for the most useless comic relief character to bring down Zagato with a well-timed "Look, a distraction!" ploy. But there will still be dice-rolling involved, and some skills... In other words, I'm not even sure what's gonna be involved. Hopefully fun.

Characters & Relationships / Which character...
July 24, 2015, 07:59:41 PM
Thought of something that might be fun for developing random headcanons. Here's the deal: I'll start with a random question like "Which character has the highest score on Angry Birds?" "Which character would put ketchup on everything?" "Which character would hold on to their belief in Santa Claus the longest?" or something else to that effect. Somebody else answers with the MKR character they think has that trait/would do that thing/whatever, with an explanation if they feel like it, but it's by no means mandatory. Then, that person gets to ask such a question of their own, wash, rinse, repeat.

First question: Which character would be terrified of going to see the dentist?

So, I've started on Mid Knight Skies, my fic about Ascot, Caldina, and Lafarga during the season gap, for Camp NaNoWriMo, and got the first draft of Ascot's intro done (basically chapter one). It's not long, maybe at or just under 2k words, and I was wondering if anybody would be interested in looking over it with a fresh set of non-totally-Ascot-biased eyes for me.

Basically, I'm looking for errors, things that need more explanation or expanding or just didn't read well, anything in particular you liked or didn't like about it, if you think something about the style needs work, etc. Let me know if you're interested.

It started with an anon on my tumblr, then spawned a kik conversation. First, the chat:

Also, springdelirium made a reply to the initial tumblr post, so please go check that out here.

So all these wonderful people have given me tons of new ideas and theories to play with. Anybody else got something to say on the matter?

Got any sexual/romantic/etc. orientation and/or gender identification headcanons for any characters? How do you usually write them? Conversely, do you feel strongly that certain characters are definitely not something in particular?

Personally, I see Eagle Vision as trans and will probably write him that way whenever I do something with him in it.
I don't normally write Ascot this way, but them as non-binary/genderfluid could definitely work, and even in AUs where that's not the case, I'll write him as occasionally rocking feminine-coded clothing if he's with people he trusts.
Caldina is heteroflexible. She's pretty experienced and could see theoretically see herself falling for any sort of person, but in practice, she's got a definite type.
Now, for Ascot, I pretty much write him as demi across the board. The one thing I couldn't ever see him as is aro.

You guys?

Fanfiction / Jane Austen's Rayearth
May 10, 2015, 01:11:48 AM
Okay, got a good one for Fuu/Ferio. Anybody here read Persuasion by Jane Austen? If not, here's the wiki, but if you don't mind the writing style, I highly recommend it. It's my favorite of the Austen novels.

Anyway, the Plot Mokona? Basically, Fuu as Anne Elliot and Ferio as Captain Wentworth. In some setting, Fuu and Ferio got engaged for a short period but then Fuu broke it off. Fuu's convinced she's doing it for his sake, Ferio's convinced it's the fault of someone else persuading her that he wasn't good enough, and they part on bad terms. Several years later, Ferio comes back way more accomplished/rich than he was and decides, what the hell, he'll just marry the first halfway decent person that comes his way, while Fuu's pretty much resigned herself to never loving again and tries to make the best of it. Then their paths cross again, but Ferio's still inwardly bitter (though he thinks he's over her) and tries to woo someone else in their circle instead...

You know what, just go read the summary. There's a lot to it, but it's got a satisfying happy ending and IMHO strong Fuu/Ferio potential. (And yes, to be completely honest, I did try fitting Ascot/Umi in there first, but the dynamics don't really suit their characters either way)

Some people might've noticed I add exclamations like 'sweet Mokona s'mores!' or 'Mokona forbid' or even 'Mokona dammit!' to some of my posts either here or on my tumblr just for fun. That got me wondering, what kind of swears/curse words would Cephirans use? What's particularly rude and/or offensive in Cephiro (or Autozam, Chizeta, or Fahren)? What's their trash talk like?

Anybody got ideas to share?
#15
What are your theories on what transpired in Cephiro while the Magic Knights were offscreen? We get told some things, like Cephiro kept eroding, at some point the strongest wills banded together to create the castle and everybody relocated there, Ascot grew up and stood up for his friends so they could be there too (not necessarily in that order), Caldina decided not to leave even though the world was crumbling, Lantis returned, Ascot learned some non-summoning magic from Clef, Ferio assumed the throne, they found out three other worlds were invading... What else? Who's got theories to play with? Also, how long do you think the gap was?

In addition to being an awesome head accessory, Ascot's hat can also be used as:

  • A pillow
  • A parachute
  • A portal to a pocket dimension where his friends stay
  • A portal to the Digimon world (I wrote some weird fanfics back in the day)
  • A candy dish
  • A place to keep your wallet
  • A place to hide the cake
  • Part of a magician act
  • A projectile to throw at bad stage acts/people making puns
  • Part of a game of keep-away
  • One of those bowls to keep decorative balls in that used to be popular for some reason
  • A shield
  • A magic artifact with a +20 adorable enhancement
  • A floatation device
What else can you do with it?

CALDINA

Because she needs more love though I'm sure Lafarga is more than willing to provide ;). More Caldina fun for everyone! *throws confetti*
#18
I tried this before in another fandom and it was really fun, so thought some of us artistic people here might like to give it a go!

Basically, you draw your favorite Magic Knight Rayearth character wearing whatever it is you're wearing at the moment (or what you claim you're wearing, we'll take your word for it) and show it off here, just for fun. Got something of my own in the works as a way of trying out my *brand spanking new drawing tablet*, and will post when it's done (bet you'll never guess which character ::) ).
