Is it better/worse than the SNES game? Opinions?
[Milieva : Topic moved from Off Topic]
I haven't ever heard of it.... ?_?
I've never played it, but I hear it's really good... If nothing else because the cut scenes are really awesome. :3
I have no clue. My friend has it and has offered to let me play it...eventually I'll have to borrow his Sega Saturn to play it.
First of all, it's a Working Designs translation. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. They did an independent translation, unaware that MKR was already brought overseas by that point. Because of this:
Emeraude is Emerald. (meh)
Zagato is Zagat. (hmph)
Hikari is Flash. (bleh)
The Mashin are finally called Machines. (HELL YEAH)
The graphics and sound are great. Very splendid 2D animation with original animated cutscenes for the game in addition to a few straight from the first season. It's a pretty solid Zelda clone with a lot of cool mechanics and jokes.
One notable thing was that in the Japanese version, EVERYBODY had voice acting. Even the town extras. What's more, you couldn't skip through dialogue because of this. This was a blessing and a curse.
In the US version, they took out a large portion of the voice acting, but added voice acting to the girls' diaries along with individual fonts, and a few other extras including outtakes.
Voice acting? Hit or miss. Ferio and Zagato are spot on. Ascot aged 20 years. Clef's voice is warped strangely and has a high pitched buzz.
The ugly part? They tried to give the game a happy ending. A long, happy ending. When the game covers the first part, which has one of the most abrupt and distressing endings outside of Space Runaway Ideon.
It's also cool because it was the last Saturn game released in the US. Food for thought.
I have a Sega Saturn now. I must get my hands on the US version of this game!
"Hint, hint" for anyone that wants to know what to get me for my 25th birthday. *wink wink* XD
I prefer the Sega Saturn game to SNES any day. Besides some great graphics you can look at Mil's post and basically see the faults of it, however in quality it beats snes handsdown. ^.^
I bought it off of eBay! I was talking to Milieva over AIM about it. I caved and bought it. It should be arriving soon and I'll let you all know which disc I got. My one hope is that it's the Umi disc.
...you people are making ME want this, now!!! *flails arms about* I don't have a Saturn, and I don't think my Aunt will let me steal hers. >.> (...yes, my brother and one of my AUNTS are the two other people who vaugly seriously game in the family. Um. Well, and Uncle Fred wargames, but that's different. And usually vaugly historical. XD)
Was the Saturn region-coded? Because if so, I'll try to buy one out here, rather than in england - I want the japanese version of the game! XD (happy ending to rayearth = NO WAY. O_o;;; that would throw me off more than american voices, I think. >.>)
Of course, I have no idea where to look for older games in kyoto... but I'm going up to tokyo soon... ^^
They are region-coded. You can buy an ST Key which allows you to play any game on a Sega Saturn. I bought one brand new for $10. I can provide the site, if you'd like. I think they even sell Sega Saturn consoles. If you want the site, I can provide it for you.
If I could read Kanji (if that's the proper text...I'm not sure if it is or not), I would have bought the Japanese version off of eBay for a lot cheaper than what I paid for the US version.
I am still wanting this game.
My Japanese is only barely passable, I understand more than I speak, but my skills are still quite poor. I think you made the wise choice, Rogue in buying the english language one, or you would likely be facing the problem I have had with the Game Gear game. (Where do I get the damned shovel?!)
I hadn't even thought of region coding...*headdesk*
Rogue ~ Hmmm, okay, thanks! I think I'll try buying one out here then, and worry about coding and stuff backwards when I get to england. ^^ (If I'm honest, I'd probably only have the console for the one game... ^^;)
Mils ~ I'm waiting on playing the game gear game properly until I get back to england. ^^;;; (I fall over the worst on reading kanji, now. But my japanese is slowly getting better...) I'm fairly safe playing things like Animal Crossing in japanese, but they tend to have a no-kanji option now. XD ...and I'm not adverse to cheating and finding a walkthrough if I'm really stuck. >.>;
XD we have to think about region coding more often in europe than in the usa?
Milieva - Thanks. For the quality of the game, I believe I got away with a helluva deal. I won't get the game for at least another week...I suspect. But when I do, I'll be sure to take pictures that way someone will have something to cheer about since it'll be either Hikaru, Fuu, or (if I'm extremely lucky) Umi on the disc. You should get it just for the sheer awesomeness of owning a piece of Sega Saturn history.
Down - It seems like the best bet. For the ST Key, I paid $10 plus shipping (which varies depending on where they are shipping to). The game, if you find the right deal, you could pay less than what I did. Good luck on your search.
For the record, even though it isn't MKR-related, I purchased a copy of another Working Designs title...Dragon Force. This game is just as rare as Magic Knight Rayearth, if not rarer. I paid $85.98 with shipping included in the price. Thank Mokona I got that raise of my paycheck otherwise I wouldn't have been able to buy either game.
Well, to revive this topic, I have to say one thing.
I finally beat the Sega Saturn title. To be honest, I wasn't too keen on Fuu having the Bow and Arrow instead of her massive sword in the series, but it actually works out just fine.
Aside from the name changes and the voice-acting, it was very decent. And when I say voice-acting, only Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is allowed to have cheesy dialogue.
heh,
because CV:SotN is one of the best freaking games ever to be made!

You have just earned major brownie points in my book.
"What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets." XD
Someone stole my original copy of sotn so I went out , looked at local stores, kept looking, drove an hour away to nashville and found it used for $50 and bought it. Lament of Innocence may be good but nothing even in the Castlevania series can touch sotn. BTW have you seen the little comic that came with the original japanese release? Priceless.
Someone stole it? Not cool. A move like that calls for immediate hurtage.
I actually haven't seen it. I'll have to find it somewhere. If I can, I'll try and get my hands on the Saturn version. It may be in Japanese, but it's the complete game since a playable Maria and two areas weren't in the PlayStation port. The Saturn port did come out later, but it would be nice to play it at least once.
Yeah, happened while I was in highschool. One of my brother's friends (I am pretty sure).
Heres a crappy link to a page with scans. They're not the good quality scans that I saw. Dont know where that page went to, cant seem to find it anywhere. http://members.tripod.com/Castlevania_X/manga_e.html
Hey you can go to an area they never completed in the saturn one right off by running out the bridge door (hard as crap). The underground gardens. Not much but they have a save spot there. (When you run out of the drawbridge you fall right into this little space. Interesting but ehhh... would have been cool if they had completed it.)
I've heard it's better than the SNES game--which I have played and have a few complaints about (like annoying music and NOT ENOUGH FERIO!). It's rather easy to find the Saturn MKR game on eBay, sometimes for really cheap, so...

That is so not cool. I can't even believe that.
Nice find. The manga looks fairly cheesy which adds to the awesomeness of the game.
You can do that in the PSX version as Richter. I've never done it, but that's ok. But here's the funny thing about all of this. The Saturn version had the extra areas the PlayStation version didn't have and yet...the PlayStation version was made first. I always thought it was the other way around, but it wasn't the case.
And if you're interested in these areas, the Underground Gardens and the Cursed Prison, http://www.quebecgamers.com/impressions/dracula_x/index.html has videos of them. It has both the normal and inverted areas not to mention footage of Maria as a playable character. The site is in French (Quebec), but all of the stuff is at the bottom of the page.

I believe it is better than the SNES title. For what it's worth, finding it on eBay is the way to go, but you'll pay a higher price for a copy that's in better condition.
Awesome. I've never seen shots with Maria as playable. I didnt know you could fully access them in saturn. Heck I just learned they release sotn for xbox360. I wonder if its the saturn or playstation version and if you can access those places? humm...

I've got it on my XBox 360. It's the PlayStation version.

Ebay is your friend.
Anyway, someday I will play this game, but I haven't even gotten through the Sega Gamegear game, given my Japanses ability sucks and is getting worse. And I can't seem to make myself get through the NES rom either.

Eep! I have never tried Ebay before..
I searched for MKR game and found some sellers but the prices are skyhigh, like 150$ :o
Ok. I found the SNES game from Internet. Yay : D I love it. I've also played Sailor Moon SNES game called "Another Story" and I find it very similar to this MKR game.

A little late...by what 5 months?
It just takes a lot of time finding an available copy. Chances are if you can find someone with a decent copy and a buy it now option, jump on it. I did and got a pristine copy of the Sega Saturn MKR game. I also got a copy of Dragon Force the same way.
I just checked eBay and there aren't any US copies being auctioned off.
Wasn't sure if I should bump this thread up or start a new one...so I bumped it...obviously.
I was thinking about doing a play-through of the Saturn MKR game. It's been a long time since I played it and got 100% on it. Been wanting to replay it. The question I should ask is if you all would want to watch it live or watch it on YouTube?
The problem with watching it live is that I could go live when you aren't available to watch. The problem with watching it on YouTube is waiting for me to make a video recording and posting it.
So I pose this to anyone that is interested. Live or YouTube?
YouTube, please.
*raises the hand of a person living in a very different timezone with moderate-on-occasions internet access* I like the youtube idea! XD
I don't have a saturn (and I'm meant to be ~saving my arm~ or whatever) so I'd love to see it played through~
Alright, I should be able to get it on YouTube. I'm not 100% sure when I'll start it up as I need to buy the appropriate items to try and get my Saturn connected to my capture card so I can record it. Essentially I need to buy adapters and cables to make a composite (R/W/Y) cable connect to component (R/G/B) and not look like utter trash.
I just need to save up the money for that as it's not necessarily cheap, but it will allow me to actually get this done. I don't want to try and do this from an emulator. I have the console and the game. I want to do this in it's purest form...with a little bit of current technology too. XD
Hate doing another double post, but disregard all the technical BS in the previous post. As it turns out, I don't need to go through all of those hoops to record gameplay. I could start it up right now, if I wanted to.
I'm going to wait a couple of days to get some things in order and then I'll try to do some recording. I'm actually getting excited. I get to record my first playthrough AND I don't have to spend any more money to make it happen.
What I've seen of this game is awesome so I'm excited!
*also excited!* I don't have a Saturn and I'm kiiiiiiiiiinda banned from gaming due to limited wrist ability so I'm really excited about this~!
Ok. I'll be recording my first test video on my next day off. I think I have everything set up the way I need it. I'll see how it turns out and I'll put it on YouTube. I think I'll make a special account just for on this forum.
