You know, in some ways, I feel like the Fuu/Ferio ship represents stability in the Magic Knight Rayearth fandom. Even when it's not someone's favorite ship, I have yet to find anybody who would list it as a notp. In fact, I have yet to meet anybody who's even just, 'Meh, whatever' about it. We all just agree that Fuu and Ferio belong together.
it really is?? like, there's no canonical disputes like Hikaru and Umi have, and their relationship is pretty simple and straightforward. I could take a magnifying glass and actually critique nitpicks here and there, but I mean really. overall? pretty inoffensive. they're both characters that are usually liked by most people, too, which helps. even if it's not your pet ship, you still at least think it's cute.
I do remember a site way back in the day (it might have been a Ferio shrine but it was a little-known one, it wasn't Battle Scars or anything) that explicitly didn't like Fuu and made a point of having a whole page explaining why and... it was just "Ferio's my favorite and he's paired up with her boo!" which... dude that's the only time I've seen that sentiment in the MKR fandom. it's common in fandom overall but not in MKR!

at the end of this year, it's gonna be 15 years they've been my OTP. no exact date - I started MKR in late October of 2000 and Fuu was my favorite within a month and I soon fell into shipping them pretty hard. I have to do something special for 15 years but I don't know whaaattt.
you know, (and this post has been about me instead of about them wow way to be egotistical, suz) I've gotten a couple messages on my art blog from people who remember my username from back in 2001-2002, said they were stoked to see me still into Fuu and Ferio? and like, THAT MAKES ME SO INDESCRIBABLY HAPPY?????? to be so associated with my OTP for such a long time? like, my heart grows three sizes every time.

I legit could go either way with Fuu/Ferio, are they together? Cool. Are they not together? Also cool. But they have that special thing that all the ships don't have: they are canon. And thus if I ever write fic, they will always be together because I tend to go along with whatever canon chooses to throw at me. (this is p. much how I feel for every fandom)

They were definitely my first OTP and then I read part 2 of the manga and found out my ultimate OT3 and they're so effing cute.

basically yes. I've gone through the cycles myself... aaand by this point I'd be shocked if I ever got over them, always kind of thought I would've by this point in my life. nope, just love them more, somehow. I am going to be telling my grandkids about my fuurio headcanons and they'll be like "ugh not Rayearth again grandmaaaa oh god she's wibbling again"
in my old copy of the manga (ancient edition with the flipped art and everything) the whole section where they can't sleep and Ferio gives the ring back to Fuu.. yeah, the pages were all falling out. I could've thrown them in the air and let them rain down on me. I should've. I still have that edition somewhere... hm.
the equivalent scene in the anime is pretty good (Takumi Yamazaki please let me marry your voice), but the pink orbs just aren't anywhere near as intimate as the rings, and the gestures and expressions were a lot more tender and heart-wrenching in the manga.
it's SUPER exciting to have another person from Camp FxF though. they're well-liked here but the majority don't claim it as their OTP so yaayyyy~~
Heey, I love these two dorks plenty, number two right after my own...uh unique crack pairing *cough* Plus they seem to get some of the cutest/best fan art. Look at Ferio in that pic, you could pinch he's cheeks he's so darn cute.
hee, like I said they're pretty well-liked regardless. which is convenient as I have to run into almost no ship hate. the most I usually see is people going "Ferio is cool, too bad he's with that lame Fuu" and tbh that's not even very common so
it's safe on my ship.
and I will be the first to say that I am spoiled horribly because they do seem to get the most ship fanart ₊ยท*◟(*≧▽≦)◜‧*･

that artist is my absolute fav. I have two of her doujinshi/fanbooks and hope to get ahold of more of them. which reminds me that I need to do better "scans" of some of the pages at some point. but her site is fiiiillllled with tons of drawings and sometimes I look through them and just have feels. she draws them so so sweetly!!
so like~ a lot of times when people are looking at more shallow interpretations of the characters they say Fuu and Ferio are opposites (Fuu=shy & Ferio=flirty) but they're SO MUCH ALIKE. they're more alike than they are different. both of them are playful and a bit sneaky (though we see less of that in Fuu in the anime :'() and both of them also have this innate gentleness about them. both are pretty good at working people (Ferio thinks he's better at it than he is, and Fuu is way better XD). and this gets into headcanon territory and the way I personally see them, but I think both of them are the type to hide their feelings -- Fuu as to not burden/worry those who love her, and Ferio more out of pride.

You know, I was thinking meta-y about Fuurio while looking at Suz's fanblog earlier and thought I'd share with the class.
When you ship just about every other 'canon' couple in Rayearth, you're shipping what they could be. You ship what Zagato and Emeraude could be if they weren't stuck in a fucked-up system, you ship what Umi and Ascot or Umi and Clef could be once the initial issues are worked out, you ship what Hikaru and Lantis and/or Eagle could be given just a little more time, you ship what Caldina and Lafarga could be if they got a little more screen/page time.
But when you ship Fuu/Ferio, you're shipping what they are. You're shipping two cute characters that canon has together, and, plot twist, you agree completely. There's no need for rants on why they belong together, though you can certainly make them if you're so inclined, because even if you can't articulate why they're so right for each other, you feel it. You feel it in their initial interactions, you feel it in the looks they give each other, you feel it in the way they have those moments where they might as well be the only people in the room (at least in the manga), you feel it in how they act differently with each other than they do with other people but you're not even sure they realize that's happening.
Suz, you've bemoaned before that the Rayearth fandom doesn't really do much in the way of non-canon shipping, and in a way, I see that, but I think part of the appeal of non-canon shipping in other fandoms is that the creators haven't made enough of a case for the canon ships. This is especially true in cases when, say, they've neglected to flesh out a female love interest beyond being a love interest for a male lead, so of course a relationship between him and a more fully developed male character is gonna be more interesting. So, while non-canon shipping is great fun and all, I see the fact that we can get so much out of the canon ships to be a positive for the series, a testament to CLAMP's ability to create a full cast of beautifully nuanced characters and make us want to play with all the relationship dynamics they've set in place.
And Fuu/Ferio is Exhibit A.

I think another factor in non-canon shipping (at least, in het non-canon shipping) is whether or not the series/work/whatever is
finished when the fandom really starts to get going. I have a limited experience, of course, but out of the various fandoms I'm interested in, the only ones that have a strong het non-canon ship for one of the male protagonists are the ones that were still ongoing when the fandom really got started.
Fuu and Ferio will always be my favourite Rayearth couple. I've loved them since the first time I read the story... If only their relationship had been deepened... I hope that CLAMP revives Rayearth someday and show the marriage between these two <3
