Midnight Talks

I know that many of us write this idea, but where does it actually come from?

Umi and Clef had one late night talk in the original cannon. He then made her herbal tea, and ushered her off to bed.

Why do we have the idea that they had more than one talk.  Why do we use that to expand on their relationship?


I should not be allowed to think about anything before 10am. I come to strang wonderings.

I think it could be because it is the only scene within canon which infers they have a relationship, so fans like to build upon this?

I dunno. I've never really though about it like that before.

I think it's because in that scene, they're both more open with each other than anywhere else - none of the teasing that is the main impression you get from the first series, but honesty about themselves. (Well, at least on Umi's part. ^^;) They seem almost vulnerable - Umi showing that she's upset, adn Clef having a visible reaction to her words... so, yeah, I think people want to use that situation to show a closeness there or developing between them. It's handy. XD


...thinking about it, though, I don't think I've ever written it myself. ...heh. Must rectify this. XD

When the girls couldn't sleep, they wanted to talk to their love interests. HikaruxLantis, FuuxFerio and UmixClef!
Umi and Clef shared a beautiful moment there, and Clef actually held Umis hand. I think that's something you do when you are close to someone, you don't touch the person you talk with if he/she is .. well.. a stranger. In Japan and in my country, Finland, we take distance to the other person, it's not normal to held hands. o.o You can only do that if you..hmm.. trust each other. Umi was the first knight Clef touched (not perv).

There's a lot of things you have to read between the lines. They do love each other! <3

It's not the only scene though. When Umi is captured Clef is soooo worried about her. And he's glad she's okay when they manage to return from the castle. Lastly, why, did he call out to her at the end of the last battle? Why not Hikaru?
The only reason people pick that particular scene is because it is the first time that the relationship is pushed upon us as an audience. I mean, come on, Umi isn't that soft for anyone else, and Clef just doesn't touch people. We were meant to be a bit "oh my!"
Hence in the Ova three years later, Clef grew up to be hawt, and they made it pretty obvious that he had a bit of a thing for Umi and vice versa.
...At least, that's what I think...

And when Umi and Caldina is sitting next to wounded Ascot, Umi is worried about Clef. When Caldina mentions Clef, Umi clenches her fists.. Caldina is the cupid in the series you know, she notices things. She notices how Umi reacts. Caldina teases Umi about Clef and Umi nervously laughing runs away from that situation and is like " Oh my God, is it that obvious!? "

And I love the part where Caldina realises that they DO have something going on (Umi has feelings for Clef and vice versa) and says something like "Oh noes.."

I know! Was waiting for something to happen for so long and it was like yay! I kinda did things backwards you see, seeing as the series wasn't shown in England. I watched the Ova first, and then after falling in love with that I ordered the 1st season over ebay. And the second season...well...youtube! ^_^

My original question was why do fanfic authors have Umi and clef having multiple late night talks  as opposed to only the one we see in fandom.

I know I see Umi being prone to nightmares and such, and seeking out comfort.

I believe all of us who are Umi/Clef fans know about any and all scenes that involve there being any mention of a relationship.  I was simply trying to understand the thought behind the multiple midnight talks that exist in fandom.

Uh, to be on topic! We seem to have an obsession with Clef the workaholic - which means the middle of the night is a convenient time for them to talk, as he might actually be Not Working, but he never seems to sleep until he collapses. *hugs Clef* The rest of the day he's likely to be busy, or other people might burst in to talk to him...

(This is possibly spamming an old thread, but I have half a one-shot on this idea somewhere and it reminded me to go FIND it sometime and finish the damn thing...)
