Regarding the situation when the Pillar passes away.

I have a guess that the High Priest or High Priestess would be a back up Pillar candidate, because that position also requires a strong will. And he or she might be the one obliged to take the position immediately once a Pillar passes away, to prevent the country falling apart that is, if that High Priest/ess never fell in love with the Pillar. Perhaps, that was the case with previous Pillars.

Suppose Zagato did not fall in love with Emeraude and did not die fighting the knights, he might be in for that fate too.

Just my musing.

[I?m splitting this off the other so conversation doesn?t get too muddled with pillar candidates being discussed with lifespans--Mils]
To love another person is to see the face of God.

Greater love got no man than he, who lay down his life for his friends.

Yes, I should have started a new thread. Thanks Milieva.

Now that's interesting.

It's frustrating because all we have to go on, to try and fill in the gaps of the system, is MKR2.  And we don't know how typical that situation was.

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ZAGATO yes

YES, I would think Soru and Guru are the two likeliest candidates for next Pillar, only that due to their knowledge of what it costs and their ties to the person who has just died, they are also sometimes the most likely to not have the single strong wish to carry them through the trial, because of their conflicted feelings about the post?

...........and that consequently they are often a candidate, but one who loses.

Oh dear, that trial is a trial in which the candidate wins or dies! Both in the anime and manga, I would hate to imagine the pillar candidate adding to the body count the legend incurs.

Yep, I can see that happening, all too easily...
