How little we actually know

Rayearth is an anime/manga that is largely based in the present with little backstory given besides what is needed for plot developement. As it is, it is a event oriented series with some character defined moments in the cases of the knights. We actually know very little about the other characters or even the pillar system. How is the Cephirean rule set up? How was it put into place? I really need to refresh myself and what is known and what isnt considering I have time right now to write, and I've got this little plot bunny running around my head. I want to try and explain Clef's backstory. However I believe it would be a long process of developing and filling in the gaps of the Cephirean heirachy. >.> I remember from the manga that Clef basically raised Emeraude so based on information from that we could say that Clef was around when the previous Pillar was in stationed. How did that pillar fall? What happened? Was clef appointed for the new pillar or was he the previous guru? How long was eme the pillar?  Anyone want to take a hand at these answers?
Welcome to the Eagle Vision Show!

I just write what the bunnies tell me....

erm....Well, you see....I have this council, and it is full of a bunch of old guys that think they know everything and have been in power for a hell of along time.

I think Emeraude was pillar for a few centuries.  Long lives, you know.

Clef likely holds his position as such because of his magical prowess.  Therefore he is also there to guide the pilar because he is one of the oldest and wisest people in Cephiro.

And because of the srength of his magical powers/will power, I think it is posible that he could have been this [--] close to becoming the pillar himself, but that could be completely off base. really hadn't thought of *that* before.   Interesting.

(hee, I WROTE the Clef-is-the-pillar fic, MORE than once, but I was tiny and bad at writing so they live in the graveyard on my other computer. XD) (I wrote the Clef is ineligible for the post of the pillar because he cares too much for *insert important thing here!* fics, too. XD Usually he cared too much for his students. Or knew he would fall in love, or something.) (...once or twice he wasn't actually human? XD;;;) Because he never, ever seems to consider himself a candidate for the role.

...though. Um. perhaps by that point he knew he doubted the pillar system too much to condone it, didn't know what to do to CHANGE it, and so knew he wouldn't be accepted for it? (OR he had fallen in love with someone by rayearth II >] )

I... you know what? We really need a rayearth-wiki or something for all the canon of the series, as a resorce for us poor writer types. XD Most of the old types have character info and everything, but not the how-were-things-run stuff, or the technology, or the little stuff...

XD

Clef is a couple of centuries older than Emeraude, I believe, and he says he 'watched over her' from birth - I don't think he can have raised her, anymore than he did his other students, not the least because her parents had to still be about to have Ferio a bit later. XD (Which raises the question: how old is Ferio?) but the word he uses in japanese means watched over and protected, that kind of thing. I think she must have either been a child of his friends, or shown a lot of will power and talent early on, so he taught her from such a young age...

He was wearing his guru robes either before or when Emeraude became the pillar - my guess is that the Guru before quit the post, or died with the fall of theprevious pillar, because otherwise Clef would have got to the questioning, regretful mindset he has in the second season before that. ^^

Hee. My biggest question is 'what was the role of the Pillar's family'? I, uh, tend to model the rest on a kind of feudal, medieval european model, because that's what my bunnies whisper at me. XD;;; But logically, the family of the pillar can't have really had power, because the Power was chosen from anyone at all that happened to be in Cephiro at the right moment, ne? Their family didn't come into that - they could be on another world, or utter scum, for all we know... yet Ferio was called Prince.

I... have begun to think that Ferio really doesn't have that role after Hikaru becomes the pillar, or maybe the title stays, but there are no duties attatched - when we see the negotiations about the future of Cephiro at the end of the manga, the person sat down and representing cephiro is Clef - Ferio's run off to greet Fuu, and there's no seat there for him. (Hmm. I wonder where all the other priests are, if Zagato was the head of them?)

...oh lord I'm rambling. O_o; sorry people! Guess it got me thinking again. XD (...in fact, I think this was pobably why I wrote that not-a-drabble yesterday. >.> stupid brain.) I will shut up now. XD
