What are you reading? (aka writing procrastination)

They say that to write well, you need to read frequently, or something to that effect..... or what ever excuse I can come up with for putting this thread in this section, but it seems to fit.

Anyway....  I know we all read and write different genres when we aren't reading Rayearth and writing Rayearth fic, but it is always fun to share what we're reading.

If anyone is interested, Down and I keep discussing the idea of tacking on a new section just for discussion of books and reading, but then, both of us have a book problem (hers is worse than mine) so shouldn't be allowed to make decisions on this without consulting the rest of the board....


Anyway....   I just finished reading Adaption by Malinda Lo.

It was good. I'm going to take it and The Little Bride (do not recommend. unhappy book) back to the library tomorrow and pick up the sequel, Inheritance, but am still eyeing my home To-Read pile and think I need to actually be setting time aside to do some reading this summer, too.  I'm far behind on my 100 book challenge, and need to catch up.

Currently (actively) reading: Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett (on kindle at lunchtimes). Haven't got far into this yet, but there aren't many Pratchett books I DON'T like? I'm behind on discworld, and catching myself up.

The Realm of the Gods (the immortals 4) by Tamora Pierce - rereading because DAINE AND NUMAIR ARE MY FAVOURITES (aside from various other characters but they're certainly in the top 10!) and I finally actually own all of them so I'm indulging myself. I'd have finished this months ago (well, end of April) except I keep cackling and rereading the end of the Emperor Mage instead. Um.

And finally, The Bone Doll's Twin (Tamir triad 1) by Lynn Flewelling, which is a prequelish trilogy set a couple of centuries before the Nightrunner series. (I like the nightrunner books. They're like oldschool slash fanfic, except they don't die! Um. High fantasy with quite a bit of hurt-comfort. And soulbonding. ...And politics and spies. Hee.) Looks like these aren't going to sit in the same area of my brain as comfort reading, but still good so far?)

And SOMEWHERE I have the fourth in Kate Jacoby's Elita series on the go (do not recommend these, they have ISSUES, but I'm too far in to stop when I already have all of them. They'll be redonated when I'm done.) but I've lost it somewhere. Oops.

Next on the list is probably The High King's Tomb (green rider 3), by Kristen Britain, unless I get out of my fantasy kick and manage to read Feed by Mira Grant (who, as Seanan McGuire, writes my ultimate favourite urban fantasy - she is my very very favourite current author~ and I'd have read Feed ages ago except zombies aren't really my thing so I'm working up to it?)

A Game of Thrones - I haven't actually picked it up since late April/early May and I'm not that far in anyway. I'm having trouble with the darkness of the series.

Apart from those, I've been reading a lot of Lord of the Rings fanfic recently--mostly book based, as that tends to be of better quality than the movie based fics.

Is the Mislaid Magician related to The Enchanted Chocolate Pot? I think that one's also by the two of them - I know it had one sequel, but never have looked up what it was... (because I would then add it to my to-be-read pile, which is dangerously large. XD)

I found the irritating book. I'm over half way through it... only 250 more pages to go............. and then book 5....................

I am indeed enjoying the InCryptid series quite a bit.

The Mislaid Magician is the second sequel to The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, being set ten years after The Grand Tour, which is the first sequel.

My biggest problem at the moment is that I have mislaid my eReader which has a mighty amount of books I want to read on but, er, can't.

That said, I am currently reading How Not To Write A Novel, non-fiction, about writing (incredibly) and quite humourous.

And I recently bought Jesus Feminist, more non-fiction about theology and feminism (a few of my favourite things)

I suppose I had started reading this series of god awful books I rescued from being chucked out at a library some years ago, which I only did because it's a paranormal romance about dragons and some part of me could not let the potential badness go to waste and I was not disappoint, oh man, oh man. (It's totally okay though, because he's in human form when they do the do).

At the moment, it's moderately quiet on the reading front.

I'm currently reading 84 Charing Cross.  Which is kind of awesome.  Letters between a writer in New York and a second-hand book seller in London from the 50s and on.  It's rather fun. Got it today, read most of it this afternoon.  Need to finish Inheritance, then I might finish off Grim while Im at it tonight.

@Rev ACK, good luck finding your ereader! I nearly took my grandmother's kindle home instead of mine once, but I haven't yet mislaid it. ...YET. D: They're such awesome things though! So many books, so easy to carry about...

I FINISHED THE LAST OF THE REALLY IRRITATING SERIES OF BOOKS NOW I CAN GET RID OF THEM YAY!!!

It's taken me the year so far to read all five. UGH. BUT THEY CAN GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(I think the whole set came from a secondhand book shop years ago. Not sure - I have no memory of actually acquiring them? But they're being Swiftly Donated. I'm going to delist the two books I've had on bookmooch for a while and give those over, too. Whee!) (I'd claim that this would give me BOOKSHELF SPACE except I've still got at least fifty books currently living in piles despite the double-stacking in various places....)

Anyone have recommendations for good epic fantasy series with decent politics/intrigue and/or worldbuilding-details and/or interesting magic systems?

In the meantime - debating whether to finally finish the last of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera, or read the the 3rd Green Rider book. DECISIONS. (As I am, apparently, looking to remain on the epic/high fantasy kick. Though now I've finished the irritating books I can take the kindle to work again and get on with my Pratchett catch-up, huzzah!)

I just finished a book called There Will Be Dragons by John Ringo. It's technically set in the far, far future, but it is fantasy and has both politics/intrigue and worldbuilding. It's the first in a series.

ETA: It's called the Council Wars series. The books are, in order:

Against the Tide
East of the Sun, West of the Moon

I recently finished "Horns" by Joe Hill (just in time to catch the movie~), and I'm in the process of reading Rosario + Vampire (manga), Ao no Exorcist (Manga), skimming through The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman, and I'm thinking of picking up the first Earthsea book by Ursula K. Le Guin. Cause... I totally need more things to read all at one time.
