Dark Horse manga scans

Hey, I found some really great scans of the Dark Horse prints of the manga and figured some people might like to see them, or use them for art, ect ect. Sometimes the way they translated differently than TokyoPop did is pretty interesting.

I have to say, they did a much better job of translating at certain points than Tokyopop did in their 10th anniversary edition.

I agree they did, but there is something about the translation...eh it's hard to explain. Sometimes the wording feels like it lacks finesse? Like it's been translated to simply, blandly in some areas? eh hard to explain, though tokyopop did make plenty of mistakes for sure. My original printings from TokyoPop of book 3 of season one has empty speech bubbles, haha.

While it might be true that the Magic Knights are just goofy goobers at heart, somehow I don't think that was the right word choice. (Yes, this still cracks me up, in a, 'Why didn't an editor catch this?' sort of way)

Ahah, true, but I wonder what word he actually used in the original Japanese? I suppose I could look at the anime with the subtitles and see what he says, but they kinda moved this scene around some, so idk if it would still use the same phrase.

That seems to have been a screwup simply between the boxed sets and the individually sold volumes. I know exactly which page you're talking about and that speech bubble is properly filled in my copy of that volume from the boxed set, but it's just like your copy in my copy of the individually sold volume. There's also a similar screwup between boxed set volumes and individually sold volumes in Volume 1 of the second story arc - when the Mashin pull the girls out of the throne room after their arrival in Cephiro, in my copy of the boxed set volume, Ferio calls Fuu's name, but in my copy of the individually sold volume, he calls Umi's name.

Although, talking about speech bubble screwups, there are several places where Tokyopop moved things around so that reading the dialogue no longer flows naturally and/or switched the dialogue between two characters who very clearly would not have any reason to say what the other character would - off the top of my head, I can recall an incident where one of the Mashin asked a question that he should have known the answer to and Hikaru gave the answer that she would have had no way of knowing and another where Mokona's "Puu puu!" was in the calm speech bubble coming from Hikaru and Hikaru's introspective words were in the spiky speech bubble coming from Mokona.

If you want to know what he said in the original Japanese, you can look at the manga translations on Definitely Not Tokyo. Those translations are dated 1995 and I certainly find them to be much more accurate/in character than the Tokyopop 10th anniversary ones.

The really funny thing is that, at least in my opinion, Tokyopop did a better job of translating in their original, flipped artwork publication of the series. Like, in Volume 1 of the first story arc with Clef's comment right before he jumps down and reveals himself to the girls: In the flipped artwork translation, he says something along the lines of "How long are you going chitchat?", which is fairly close to the translation found on DNT and sounds reasonably in character. But in the 10th anniversary translation, he says "Man, you guys sure can gab.", which just - that does not sound anything at all like something Clef might say.

Oh! Oh! *raises hand* That happens to one of Ascot's lines, too, when Umi's about to call on Selece in volume six. The translation has Umi saying "Ascot, I-" and Ascot interrupting with "You're going to summon the Mashin." while the copy I have (Tokyopop 2003 box set) tries to play it off as only Umi going, "Ascot... I'm going to call upon Selece." even though that word bubble is technically pointing to Ascot (he has his mouth open and everything).

In most the translations I've seen, he just calls them weak and stupid. "She lost so easily to weak people like you." "Only stupid people get hurt to protect others."
Of course, that comes full circle. "I regret being so powerless. If I had more power, I wouldn't have to put you in such a dangerous position, Umi." AW, WOULD YOU JUST LOOK AT MY ADORABLE LIL BROTHER BEING A BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! *rolls around in the feels*
